This is obviously an outsider's perspective, but if I had lived long-term in Japan, I wouldn't have been that thrilled about a marriage either. Some marriages are still arranged (my teacher's was, and she was only mid-thirties.) A lot of them, the guy goes out late on the town to wine and dine clients at hostess clubs and soap bars...
